Westminster Cathedral’s architect James Francis Bentley was a tour de force in Victorian church design and had grand ideas for its lighting. However, the Cathedral’s resources allowed only utilitarian fittings in all but the main nave. But thanks to a recent bequest the long planned for chandeliers have finally been installed.
Dernier & Hamlyn produced a prototype several years ago in anticipation of the Cathedral raising the funds needed to finance this project. So when the time was right, it was a straightforward process to turn the prototype into a stunning black light fitting comprising four lights suspended on four way twisted rod suspensions with polished copper shades. While it was based on Bentley’s original design, the new fitting integrated the requirements of current electrical regulations.
Neil Fairbairn works manager at Westminster Cathedral comments:
“This chandelier is a splendid addition to the Cathedral and takes it a significant step closer to Bentley’s vision. Dernier & Hamlyn worked closely with us and the current Cathedral Architect, Michael Drury Architects, to enable us to develop the prototype into an architectural statement.”
