Amco Awarded £6 million Rail Contract
Date: 17 July 08
Amalgamated Construction ("Amco") has won a prestigious £6 million contract with Network Rail to repair the 140-year old Bradway Tunnel, located between Sheffield and Chesterfield. Amco is a specialist engineering company with a focus on rail infrastructure, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering projects.
The contract will be undertaken by the company's rail division, Amco Rail, which has a long and proven track record of delivering complex rail tunnel repairs. Similar recent projects have been undertaken for Network Rail on the Bramhope Tunnel in Leeds and the Severn Tunnel between Bristol and Wales.
David Jackson, Managing Director of Amco, commented: "Our longstanding credentials in the rail sector were vital to winning this contract. Despite the turbulence in the UK economy generally, we are seeing strong growth prospects across our rail and specialist engineering divisions relating to major infrastructure projects."
The works on the Bradway Tunnel will include brickwork pressure pointing, drilling and compensation grouting, water management by resin injection, shaft drainage, rockbolting and a sprayed concrete tunnel lining.
Amco built its reputation for delivering complex engineering solutions through years of operating in the coal mining industry. As this sector declined Amco transferred its skills into the rail and mechanical and electrical engineering sectors, particularly the power industry where it has a presence at most of the UKs major coal and nuclear power stations.
Amco works throughout the UK and employs over 730 specialist staff and operatives. Amco, which is expected to achieve sales of £90 million in 2008, has seen its rail division double in size over the last two years.
