Now for a seasonal story courtesy of the British Venture Capital Association (BVCA), which is circulating it this Christmas. Once upon a time there was a little book publisher called The Works. The publisher launched a competition for would-be children’s writers. This was won by Mrs June Morley, with her first book Little Mole and the Fading Sun, and everyone was very happy.

The Works, Britain's largest discount bookstore, has been honoured by business turnaround professionals for its successful transformation into one of the country's fastest-growing and most dynamic retail groups.
The Works was chosen by judges at Europe's Top Turnaround Awards at the Institute for Turnaround's Strictly Turnaround Awards 2009 on 3 December. The TV journalist and dancing star John Sergeant presented the Turnaround Financier of the Year prize to Garry Wilson, Partner of Endless, which acquired The Works with the retail entrepreneur Anthony Solomon last year. The award was accepted on behalf of The Works and Endless.

Endless wins Turnaround Financier of the Year at the 2009 Institute For Turnaround Awards

Endless LLP was recognised at the UK's premier turnaround awards, being awarded the Turnaround Financier of the Year for 2009. John Sergeant presented Garry Wilson with the award, referencing the turnaround at discount book store, The Works, which has seen a c£5m loss pre-acquisition turn to a £3m profit just a year later and a prospective profit in the second year of some £9m+. Mr Sergeant also commented on the acquisition of £500m turnover Vasanta Group by Endless in July 2009, just 21 days after the first introduction, in the process securing the future of 1400 jobs.

DavyMarkham triumphs as Sheffield celebrates its business success

Engineering company DavyMarkham was the big winner at last night's Sheffield Business Awards.
The heavy engineering group with turnover of £20m which was bought by Yorkshire private equity and turnaround fund Endless in 2007, won the title of Barclays Commercial Bank Outstanding Business of the Year and its managing director, Kevin Parkin, was named Rensburg Sheppards Business Person of the Year.
